My daughter is 17. She is very responsible, respectful, and makes excellent marks in school. I am not extremely strict with her, as I’ve never had to be. She is a genuinely good girl, child, person. This question is in regard to her appearance….
I do not allow her to wear pants of any sort with writing on the butt and she has never been allowed to have red nail polish. She is generally modest anyway and doesn’t fuss about the pants, but she now does want red polish. I personally (and to each their own) think red polish is for adult women. I do not helicopter parent. This is just maybe the way I was raised? We get our nails done at gether regularly.
I just feel there are SO MANY colors to choose from. AITAH? Should I stick to my guns or let it lie and let her get the polish? Yes, I know it’s temporary. Yes, I know it’s superficial. And yes, maybe this is a petty question to some. But I also see that already she appears grown above her years. Perhaps I’m just a paranoid mother knowing there are all the weirdos out there? Comments appreciated. Whether in my favor or not.

Ok. I see it am outnumbered here. And that’s OK. I realize my views on nail polish may be outdated. To clarify, no, I don’t think red polish will make my daughter a harl*t, pr*stitute, sl**, or any of the other choice words in the comments. My goal is not to control her, but to protect her. My views come from the way I was raised. She is an AMAZING girl. But at the end of the day, she is still yet a girl, not a woman. And while I stress to her not to be too awful worried about what others think, there is still some value in not being too precocious. I did tell her she could have red if she wanted it at our last nail appointment (after the original post) she said no. And not for fear of disappointing me.
She said ‘meh, I dont really want it’. I suppose the reality was that she needed to know she had that freedom of expression. I showed her this post and comments. I got the ‘see?!?’ pointy finger from her. Lol. But at the end of the day, I have a great daughter and she sees me as a great mama, red nail polish rule and all. ❤️ Thank you all for your input.
