PART 9
The radio went silent.
No one spoke.
Agent Lawson looked at the deputy.
“Secure every exit.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Within seconds, every FBI agent on the property moved toward the old guest house.
Daniel stayed beside me.
“So much for an abandoned building.”
Margaret’s face had become almost as pale as Ethan’s.
She whispered,
“It can’t be.”
I looked at her.
“What can’t be?”
She swallowed.
“Richard told me no one would ever enter that house again.”
“You keep saying that.”
I replied.
“But you’re not telling us why.”
She looked toward the ceiling.
As though she could already see the guest house standing alone beyond the gardens.
“Because…”
“Someone died in there.”
The room fell silent.
Agent Lawson stopped walking.
“Who?”
Margaret slowly shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel frowned.
“You don’t know?”
“I never saw the body.”
“I only saw Richard.”
“He came home covered in ash.”
“He was carrying a metal box.”
“He locked himself in his study for two days.”
“When he finally came out…”
“He ordered the guest house sealed forever.”
I felt a chill.
“And you never asked questions?”
“I did.”
“He told me the less I knew…”
“…the longer I would live.”
Outside…
More FBI vehicles rolled through the front gate.
News helicopters had begun circling overhead.
The Blackwood estate had become a crime scene.
Agent Lawson spoke into her radio.
“Team One, hold your positions.”
“No one enters until I arrive.”
The reply came immediately.
“Understood.”
“But there’s something else.”
“What?”
“We can hear movement upstairs.”
“Heavy footsteps.”
“They stop every time we knock.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Someone has been hiding there for years…”
“…or they arrived before we did.”
We hurried across the estate.
Rain continued falling softly over the gardens.
The old guest house stood nearly two hundred yards from the main mansion.
Its white paint had faded long ago.
Vines covered the front porch.
Broken shutters hung from rusted hinges.
It looked forgotten.
But someone was inside.
As Agent Lawson approached the front door, she knocked firmly.
“FBI.”
“Open the door.”
No answer.
She knocked again.
“We have a federal search warrant.”
Silence.
Then…
A slow creaking sound echoed from the second floor.
Every agent raised their head.
One curtain moved.
Only slightly.
Just enough for someone to look outside.
“I saw someone.”
One of the agents whispered.
“So did I.”
Agent Lawson stepped back.
“Breaching team.”
Two agents carried a heavy steel ram onto the porch.
Margaret suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Claire…”
“If there’s still someone living in that house…”
“They know everything.”
“What do you mean?”
“They know why Thomas Callahan disappeared.”
My heartbeat quickened.
Before I could ask another question…
CRASH!
The front door burst inward.
Agents rushed inside.
“Federal agents!”
“Show your hands!”
The first floor was empty.
Furniture sat beneath white sheets.
Dust covered every surface.
Nothing had been touched in years.
Except…
Fresh muddy footprints.
Leading toward the staircase.
“Second floor!”
The agents climbed quickly.
One room after another…
Empty.
Another bedroom…
Empty.
An old library…
Empty.
Finally…
Only one locked door remained at the end of the hallway.
The same muddy footprints stopped there.
Agent Lawson tried the handle.
Locked.
She nodded toward the breaching team.
“Open it.”
The ram struck once.
The old wood cracked.
A second hit.
The lock shattered.
The door flew open.
Every weapon was raised.
The room was empty.
Completely empty.
No person.
No furniture.
Only a rocking chair…
Still moving gently…
As if someone had stood up only seconds earlier.
Then one young agent pointed toward the fireplace.
“Ma’am…”
“Look at the wall.”
Behind the broken fireplace bricks…
A narrow passage had been hidden for decades.
And from somewhere deep inside that tunnel…
PART 10
The sound echoed through the hidden passage.
A slow…
Heavy…
Metallic click.
Agent Lawson immediately raised her hand.
“Nobody moves until we clear the tunnel.”
Two FBI agents switched on powerful flashlights.
The narrow passage stretched beneath the guest house.
The walls were lined with old brick.
The air smelled of dust and damp earth.
“This tunnel wasn’t built recently,” one agent observed.
Daniel ran his hand along the wall.
“No.”
“It’s been here for decades.”
Agent Lawson nodded.
“Let’s move.”
The agents advanced slowly.
Every few feet, another light illuminated the darkness.
The tunnel sloped downward before opening into a circular stone chamber.
Unlike the room beneath Ethan’s office…
This place had not been carefully preserved.
Cabinets had been overturned.
Boxes lay ripped open.
Thousands of papers covered the floor.
Someone had searched this room.
Recently.
Agent Lawson knelt beside a stack of scattered documents.
“The dust is disturbed.”
“They were here today.”
One of the agents picked up a flashlight from the ground.
“It still feels warm.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“We missed them by only a few minutes.”
I slowly walked farther into the chamber.
The walls were covered with shelves.
Most of them stood empty.
Only torn file folders remained.
It looked as though someone had been removing evidence in a hurry.
Then I noticed something in the corner.
A large oak desk.
Unlike everything else…
It had barely been touched.
Resting on top was an old typewriter.
Beside it sat a framed photograph.
I picked it up.
The picture showed four people standing in front of the original Blackwood Development headquarters.
Richard Blackwood.
Thomas Callahan.
My father.
And a fourth man I had never seen before.
All four were smiling.
All four looked proud.
Written beneath the photograph were the words:
Founders’ Meeting
April 17, 1995
I frowned.
“Daniel…”
“There were four founders.”
He took the picture from my hands.
His eyes widened.
“This changes everything.”
Margaret stepped closer.
She stared at the unknown man.
“Oh, no…”
“I remember him.”
I looked at her.
“Who is he?”
She whispered his name.
“Charles Whitmore.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“The attorney?”
Margaret nodded.
“He handled every legal document for the company.”
“He was Richard’s closest friend.”
Daniel’s face grew serious.
“Not anymore.”
I looked between them.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel reached into one of the torn folders.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
LOCAL ATTORNEY DIES IN SINGLE-CAR ACCIDENT.
The date was twenty years old.
“He didn’t retire,” Daniel said quietly.
“He died.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Richard never believed it was an accident.”
Before anyone could respond, an agent called from the far side of the chamber.
“Agent Lawson!”
Everyone hurried over.
The agent held a small digital recorder.
“It was hidden beneath the desk.”
Agent Lawson carefully pressed the play button.
Static filled the chamber.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
Calm.
Measured.
“If you’re listening to this recording…”
“…then someone finally found the tunnel.”
I froze.
I recognized the voice immediately.
Richard Blackwood.
The recording continued.
“I don’t have much time.”
“If I disappear…”
“…it wasn’t an accident.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Richard’s voice remained steady.
“There were four founders.”
“But only three of us wanted to build an honest company.”
The room fell silent.
My pulse quickened.
Richard took a slow breath before speaking again.
“The fourth founder…”
“…is the most dangerous man I have ever known.”
Daniel looked at me.
“He never says the name.”
Richard continued.
“I hid proof of everything.”
“But I divided it into three separate collections.”
“The first is beneath my office.”
“The second is beneath this guest house.”
“The third…”
The recording suddenly stopped.
The chamber fell into complete silence.
One of the agents checked the recorder.
“The rest has been erased.”
Daniel slowly looked around the room.
“No…”
He pointed toward the empty shelves.
“It wasn’t erased.”
“It was stolen.”
Agent Lawson narrowed her eyes.
“Which means whoever was hiding in this house…”
“…left with the final collection of evidence.”
At that exact moment, an FBI radio crackled to life.
“Agent Lawson.”
“Go ahead.”
“We’ve just identified a vehicle leaving the estate through the north service road.”
“Who was driving?”
There was a long pause.
When the answer came…
Every person in the chamber turned toward Margaret.
“Ma’am…”
“The driver has been identified as Olivia Harrington.”
PART 11
Margaret staggered backward.
“Olivia?”
Her voice barely escaped her lips.
“That’s impossible.”
Agent Lawson immediately grabbed her radio.
“Dispatch every available unit.”
“Black Range Rover.”
“Driver identified as Olivia Harrington.”
“Possible evidence removal.”
The reply came within seconds.
“Units are in pursuit.”
Daniel looked at me.
“So Ethan wasn’t trying to escape.”
“He was buying her time.”
Everything suddenly made sense.
While every agent focused on Ethan…
Olivia had slipped quietly across the estate.
Straight to the guest house.
Straight to the tunnel.
Straight to the missing evidence.
Agent Lawson turned toward one of the evidence technicians.
“What exactly is missing?”
The technician examined the empty shelves.
“Difficult to say.”
“But judging from the dust…”
“There were at least twelve large archive boxes here.”
“Twelve?”
Daniel frowned.
“Someone knew exactly what they were looking for.”
I slowly looked around the underground chamber.
“No.”
“They didn’t search.”
“They collected.”
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.”
“The room isn’t destroyed.”
“It’s organized.”
“Whoever came here already knew where everything was.”
Margaret suddenly whispered,
“Richard…”
Everyone turned toward her.
“He once told me…”
“‘If anyone ever enters this room without hesitation…'”
“…’they already know every secret inside it.'”
Silence filled the chamber.
Agent Lawson spoke quietly.
“Which means Olivia has been here before.”
Margaret slowly nodded.
“I think…”
“I think Richard brought her.”
Ethan’s voice suddenly echoed from the tunnel entrance.
“No!”
Everyone turned.
Two agents were holding him tightly by both arms.
His expensive suit was covered in mud.
His hair was soaked from the rain.
His face looked completely defeated.
“You’ve got the wrong person!”
He looked directly at me.
“Claire…”
“You have to believe me.”
I remained silent.
He took another shaky breath.
“Olivia wasn’t stealing the evidence.”
“She was protecting it.”
Daniel folded his arms.
“From whom?”
Ethan lowered his head.
Then he answered with four words.
“From Charles Whitmore.”
The room froze.
Daniel stared at him.
“Charles Whitmore died twenty years ago.”
Ethan slowly looked up.
“No.”
“He faked his death.”
Margaret’s knees nearly gave way.
“No…”
Ethan nodded.
“My father told me the truth three years before he died.”
“Charles paid someone to stage the accident.”
“He disappeared.”
“He changed his name.”
“He built another life.”
Agent Lawson stepped closer.
“And you’ve known this all along?”
Ethan shook his head.
“I knew he was alive.”
“I never knew where.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“So why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Because every year…”
“…someone sent me another letter.”
My heartbeat quickened.
“What kind of letter?”
He slowly reached into his jacket.
One of the agents removed a folded envelope from the inside pocket.
Agent Lawson opened it carefully.
There was no return address.
Only a typed message.
The paper had yellowed with age.
She read it aloud.
“Keep the Blackwood secret…”
“…or everyone your father loved will be remembered as murderers.”
No one spoke.
The letter continued.
“You will obey.”
“You will move the money.”
“You will keep searching for Richard’s third collection.”
“You will never tell the FBI.”
Signed with only one letter.
C.
Daniel looked stunned.
“For twenty years…”
“Someone has been controlling this family.”
Ethan nodded.
“I wasn’t protecting myself.”
“I was terrified.”
Before anyone could question him further…
An agent’s radio crackled.
“Agent Lawson.”
“We’ve located Olivia’s vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Abandoned.”
“Three miles east of the estate.”
“Was she inside?”
A pause followed.
Then came the answer that made every person in the tunnel fall silent.
“No.”
“The vehicle is empty.”
“But we found something on the driver’s seat.”
Agent Lawson’s voice became tense.
“What?”
“A handwritten note.”
“It only contains one sentence.”
She waited.
The agent read it aloud.
“If you want Richard’s final collection…”
“…come to the place where Thomas Callahan took his last breath.”
The tunnel fell silent.
Daniel slowly looked toward me.
“I don’t think Thomas Callahan disappeared.”
I looked back at him.
“No…”
“I think someone buried the truth.”
“And they just invited us to find it.”…………………….
