He Truly Wants Instead Of Sharing It? My name is Elena. I live in Cleveland, Ohio, and my son Jacob is turning 10 this May. For years, his birthday has been tied to my niece by marriage, Georgia, because their birthdays are only a few days apart. My mother-in-law has custody of Georgia, and every year she suggests a joint party.

At first, Jacob didn’t mind; he was younger and went along with it, while I usually covered most of the expenses myself. My mother-in-law often promised to split the costs but backed out at the last minute, and to keep the peace, I just paid for everything.

This year, however, Jacob told me something different. He looked at me and said, “Mom, I just want my own party. You only turn 10 once”.

Hearing that, I knew how important it was to him and I agreed. When my mother-in-law asked about their party, I told her Jacob wanted his own this year and I hadn’t made plans yet. She grew upset and said it wasn’t fair for him to celebrate without Georgia.

Then she called my husband, who’s Jacob’s stepdad. Now my husband is angry. He says Jacob is being spoiled and that if he won’t share, he shouldn’t get a party at all. I feel torn. I
