PART 8: THE CONFESSION MY MOTHER TOOK TO HER GRAVE For several seconds, I couldn’t speak. My mother. The woman who taught me never to lie. The woman who spent her final years protecting my sister and me. The woman whose handwritten letters had guided us toward the truth. Caroline was telling me that our mother had paid someone to keep a secret about our father’s death. “No,” I whispered into the phone. “There has to be a mistake.” Caroline began crying. “I thought the same thing, Maggie. But Dr. Hayes told me he has proof.” I gripped Rebecca’s desk. “What kind of proof?” “A letter from Mom. And copies of the medical records he never submitted.” Rebecca stepped closer. “Margaret, ask Caroline whether Dr. Hayes is willing to speak with investigators.” I repeated the question. Caroline hesitated. “He said he would. But he’s frightened. He thinks someone has been watching him.” A cold sensation traveled down my spine. “Where is he?” “In a private care facility outside Dayton.” “What’s the name?” Caroline gave me the information. Rebecca immediately wrote it down. Then my sister said something that made my stomach tighten. “Maggie, there’s something else. When Dr. Hayes contacted me three months ago, he said Mom hadn’t paid him to cover up a crime for money.” I closed my eyes. “Then why?” Caroline’s answer came slowly. “Because she was protecting one of us.” I couldn’t breathe. “One of us?” “Yes.” I looked toward the window. Outside, people were walking down the sidewalk, carrying groceries and talking on their phones. Ordinary lives. Ordinary problems. And inside Rebecca’s office, the story of my family was becoming something I could barely recognize. “Caroline, are you saying Mom believed one of her daughters was responsible for Dad’s death?” “I don’t know,” she whispered. “Dr. Hayes refused to explain over the phone.” I swallowed. “Then we’ll find out.” The following morning, Rebecca arranged for an investigator to interview Dr. Hayes at the care facility. I wanted to go with them. I needed to look into the eyes of the man who had signed my father’s death certificate. But Rebecca insisted that the initial interview should take place without family members present. “Margaret, if there’s evidence of misconduct, the investigators need to preserve his statement properly.” I hated waiting. Every hour felt like another year stolen from my life. Caroline remained in the hospital, slowly recovering. Emily stayed beside her. Tyler had returned to my house under an agreement that he would cooperate fully with the investigation and stop communicating with Evelyn. Richard was staying elsewhere. I couldn’t bear to look at him. Not after learning he had fathered my sister’s child. Not after hearing his voice on the recording from my father’s final meeting. And not after discovering that he had helped conceal so much of the truth. That afternoon, Rebecca called. “Margaret, Dr. Hayes has given a statement.” I sat down immediately. “What did he say?” “He confirmed that he was called to your father’s house on the morning Thomas collapsed.” My heart pounded. “Was he there when it happened?” “He says he arrived shortly afterward. He also admits he omitted important details from the medical account he gave the family.” I closed my eyes. “Why?” Rebecca paused. “Because your mother asked him to.” I felt tears burning behind my eyes. “What did she ask him to hide?” “He says there was a violent argument shortly before your father collapsed.” I gripped the phone. “Between whom?” “Thomas, Evelyn, Charles, and Richard.” I waited. Rebecca continued. “According to Hayes, your father discovered that Richard had helped authorize transfers from the business accounts. Thomas confronted him, and the argument became physical.” My stomach dropped. “Richard attacked my father?” “Hayes says Richard grabbed Thomas during the confrontation. Thomas fell against his desk. But Hayes cannot establish whether the fall caused or contributed to the cardiac event.” I stared at the wall. The same Richard who had held me while I cried at my father’s funeral. The same Richard who told me Dad died peacefully. He had been involved in a physical confrontation with my father shortly before his death. I felt sick. “Why didn’t anyone tell us?” “That’s where your mother comes in.” I held my breath. “Tell me.” Rebecca spoke carefully. “Your mother arrived at the house after the ambulance was called. Hayes claims Richard told her about the confrontation and begged her not to reveal it.” I shook my head. “Mom would never protect Richard.” “According to Hayes, Richard told her something that changed her mind.” “What?” Rebecca paused. “He claimed Caroline had been involved in moving some of the money.” I closed my eyes. Caroline. Twenty-two years ago, my younger sister had been working part-time in my father’s office while studying bookkeeping. She had access to records. She trusted Richard. And Richard had apparently used that trust. “Hayes says your mother feared Caroline could be blamed for financial crimes she didn’t understand,” Rebecca continued. “Richard threatened to implicate her if the confrontation became public.” The room seemed to shrink around me. My mother had been blackmailed. She hadn’t protected Richard because she trusted him. She had kept silent because he threatened to destroy Caroline. But Rebecca wasn’t finished. “Hayes also says your mother gave him money several weeks later.” My voice trembled. “How much?” “Twenty-five thousand dollars.” “For what?” “To obtain copies of the complete medical records and to ensure that certain details about the confrontation remained confidential.” I covered my face. My mother had bought silence. But she had also bought evidence. “That’s why she kept everything,” I whispered. Rebecca nodded, though she was miles away. “It appears she may have been gathering information while trying to keep your sister safe.” I began crying. All those years, I believed my mother had become distant after Dad’s death because she was grieving. Now I wondered how many nights she had spent terrified that the truth would destroy both her daughters. Then Rebecca said something I didn’t expect. “Margaret, Hayes provided a copy of the letter your mother wrote to him.” I sat upright. “What does it say?” “He gave investigators permission to share its contents with us.” Rebecca read slowly. “Leonard, I know what happened in Thomas’s study. I also know that Richard is using Caroline’s name to protect himself. I will not allow my daughter to be sacrificed for something she did not knowingly do. Keep the records safe. One day, when I have enough evidence, I will make sure the truth comes out.” My hands began shaking. There was more. “Until then, please understand that my silence is not forgiveness. It is the only protection I can offer my children while I uncover the rest.” I broke down. My mother hadn’t stopped fighting. She had simply been fighting alone. For years. Against people who smiled at her dinner table. Against people who attended my father’s funeral. Against the very man I had married. “Rebecca,” I whispered, “I want Richard questioned about everything.” “He already is,” she replied. “And the new information makes his earlier statements especially important.” I wiped my tears. “What about Evelyn?” “The financial investigation is expanding. But there’s something you need to know.” My stomach tightened. “What?” “Charles Whitmore has begun cooperating with investigators through his attorney.” I went still. “And?” “He has identified an offshore account he says was used to conceal funds diverted from your father’s business and the later trust.” I felt my heart race. “Can they recover the money?” “It’s too early to know. But investigators have requested records and are tracing the transfers.” I looked at the photograph of my parents beside my bed. Three million dollars. Possibly more. But suddenly, the money felt like the least important part. My father had died believing people he trusted were stealing from him. My mother had died carrying a secret she hoped would someday protect her daughters. Caroline had lost eighteen years with me. And Emily had grown up without knowing her father. All because a handful of people believed money mattered more than human lives. That evening, I went to the hospital. Caroline was sitting upright in bed when I entered. She looked pale, but she smiled when she saw me. “Maggie.” I walked to her and sat beside the bed. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. Then I took her hand. “I know about Mom.” Caroline’s eyes filled with tears. “She was trying to protect me.” I nodded. “She was.” Caroline began crying. “I didn’t deserve it.” “Don’t say that.” She looked at me. “Maggie, I betrayed you. I slept with your husband. I lied about Emily. And Mom spent years protecting me from the consequences of trusting Richard.” I felt a sharp ache in my chest. “Yes,” I said quietly. “You hurt me more than I can explain.” She lowered her eyes. “But you’re still my sister,” I continued. “And I don’t want to lose another eighteen years.” Caroline sobbed. I leaned forward and held her. Forgiveness wasn’t going to happen in a single conversation. But I could choose not to let the lies keep us apart. After a while, she pulled back. “There’s something I need to tell you.” I sighed. “Please tell me it’s not another secret.” She gave a weak smile. “It is. But this one might help.” I sat straighter. “What?” “Before Mom died, she visited me.” I stared at her. “What?” Caroline nodded. “She found me about six months before her death. I was living under another name, and Emily was still a little girl.” My heart nearly stopped. “Mom knew you were alive?” “Yes.” I looked away. Another truth I hadn’t known. “Why didn’t she tell me?” “Because Evelyn had threatened to take Emily from me if my location became known. Mom believed Evelyn had people watching us.” Caroline wiped her eyes. “She said she needed time to make everything safe.” I swallowed. “And then she died.” Caroline nodded. “But before she left, she gave me something.” “What?” “A small envelope. She told me not to open it until I was ready to return home.” My heart began pounding. “Did you open it?” “Yes. After Emily found Tyler.” “And?” Caroline reached toward the bedside drawer. She removed a faded cream envelope. My mother’s handwriting was unmistakable. TO MY DAUGHTERS, WHEN YOU ARE FINALLY TOGETHER. I stared at it. Caroline handed it to me. “This belongs to both of us.” With trembling fingers, I opened it. Inside was a single handwritten letter. “My precious girls, if you are reading this together, then the day I prayed for has finally arrived. There are things I could not explain while I was alive. I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people. And I let fear keep me silent longer than I should have.” Tears blurred the words. “But everything I discovered is documented. I placed the original records where no one could reach them without both of you.” I looked at Caroline. “Both of us?” She nodded. “Keep reading.” I continued. “The safe-deposit box contains copies. The final evidence is elsewhere. It includes the original financial ledgers, the corrected estate documents, and a signed statement from a witness who knows what happened to your father.” My hands began shaking. Below the paragraph was a sentence underlined twice. “The truth is buried where our family first began.” I frowned. “What does that mean?” Caroline shook her head. “I’ve been trying to understand it for years.” Then I remembered something. Our parents’ first home. A small white farmhouse outside Lancaster. The place where Caroline and I had spent our childhood summers. Our father used to call it the beginning of everything. And behind the house stood an enormous oak tree. Under that tree, our mother had buried a metal time capsule with us when I was twelve and Caroline was six. I looked at my sister. “The farmhouse.” Her eyes widened. “What?” “Mom always said our family began at the farmhouse.” Caroline slowly sat upright. “Oh, my God.” I continued. “And remember the time capsule beneath the oak tree?” She covered her mouth. “Maggie…” I stood. “That’s where she hid it.” But Caroline suddenly grabbed my wrist. “Wait.” I turned. Her expression had changed. “What is it?” “The farmhouse was sold years ago.” “I know.” “Do you remember who bought it?” I frowned. “I thought it was some investment company.” Caroline’s face went white. “Exactly.” A cold sensation spread through my chest. “Caroline, what are you saying?” She swallowed. “The company that purchased the farmhouse was connected to Whitmore Holdings.” I stared at her. Richard. Charles. Evelyn. They had somehow gained control of the one place my mother had described as holding the final evidence. I grabbed my phone and called Rebecca. She answered immediately. “Margaret?” “I know where Mom hid the originals.” “Where?” “The old farmhouse outside Lancaster.” There was a pause. Then Rebecca said, “Margaret, don’t go there.” My stomach tightened. “Why?” “Because investigators discovered something about that property this afternoon.” “What?” “The current ownership records show it was transferred to a new company last month.” I closed my eyes. “Whose company?” Rebecca took a breath. “An entity connected to Evelyn Parker.” I gripped the phone. “And?” “There’s a demolition permit pending.” My blood ran cold. “Demolition?” “Yes. The application covers the old farmhouse and part of the surrounding grounds.” I looked toward Caroline. She had heard every word. “Rebecca, they’re going to destroy the evidence.” “We don’t know that’s their purpose. But I’ll contact the investigators immediately.” “When is the demolition scheduled?” Rebecca hesitated. “According to the permit application, work could begin Monday.” Monday. Less than three days away. I felt panic rising in my chest. Then Caroline whispered something. “Maggie…” I turned. She looked terrified. “What?” “Mom didn’t bury the time capsule beneath the oak tree.” I froze. “What do you mean?” Caroline swallowed. “She moved it.” “Where?” My sister’s eyes filled with tears. “Dad built a small stone foundation beneath the old garden shed. Mom told me she buried the capsule there after she discovered someone had been searching the property.” I gripped her hand. “Then that’s where we need to look.” But Caroline shook her head. “Maggie, there’s something else.” I stared at her. “What now?” She reached for her phone. “Emily received a message this morning. She didn’t tell me until an hour ago.” “From whom?” Caroline turned the screen toward me. The sender was an unknown number. The message contained a photograph. A photograph of the old farmhouse. Except the garden shed was no longer standing. It had been torn down. The earth beneath it was freshly disturbed. And beside the empty foundation stood a familiar black SUV. Evelyn’s vehicle. Below the photograph were six words. “YOU’RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.” I stared at the screen. Then another message arrived. This time, it contained a short video. Caroline pressed play. The camera moved slowly across the old farmhouse. Then through the front door. Into the kitchen. Down a narrow hallway. And finally, into my father’s old study. The camera stopped in front of a wooden cabinet. A man’s hand reached toward a hidden compartment. Then a voice spoke. A voice I recognized immediately. Richard. “Evelyn, this is what Thomas was trying to protect.” The camera shifted. And I saw what Richard was holding. A thick leather folder. Stamped with my father’s initials. T.B. Then Evelyn stepped into the frame. She smiled. “Twenty-two years, Richard. Twenty-two years, and we’re finally going to finish what we started.” The video ended. My hands were shaking. Caroline stared at me. And just as I reached for my phone to call Rebecca again, a final message appeared. “Margaret, if you want the original evidence, come to the farmhouse tomorrow at noon. Come alone. And don’t tell the police.” Below it was a photograph that made my heart stop. Tyler. My son. Sitting in a chair inside the farmhouse. His wrists appeared bound behind his back. And behind him stood Charles Whitmore. I couldn’t breathe. Because only two hours earlier, Tyler had texted me that he was going to meet his father. Now I knew where he had gone. And I knew something else. Evelyn wasn’t simply trying to destroy my father’s secrets anymore. She was using my son to make sure I never revealed them……… TO BE CONTINUED IN PART 9… CLICK HERE CONTINUE TO READ PART 9 – My son hit me last night.
