AITJ for walking out of my dad’s retirement party after he introduced me to his colleagues as his “stepson”?
Some context first.
My parents split when I was 4. My dad remarried when I was 7 and had two biological kids with his second wife. I lived with my mom but spent every other weekend with him growing up, so we were never super close but I wouldn’t say we were distant either. I’m 36 now, I have my own life, we talk maybe once or twice a month. It’s fine. I’ve never had a big issue with how he introduced me to people before, or if I did I let it go.
Last Saturday was his retirement party. He worked at the same engineering firm for 31 years and this was a big deal to him, a proper event with maybe 80 or 90 people, open bar, speeches, the whole thing. I drove three hours to be there. I bought him a nice gift. I genuinely wanted to celebrate him.
About an hour in, he’s doing the rounds and he brings me over to a group of his longtime colleagues, guys he’s worked with for decades, some of them I’d seen in photos my whole life. He puts his arm around me and says “this is my stepson, he drove all the way up for tonight.” And then he moves on.
I stood there for a second and something just shifted in me. I’m not his stepson. I have never been his stepson. My parents were married, he is my biological father, I carry his last name. His wife’s kids from before they married, they’re my half siblings, but I am his son. That word felt like being quietly handed something and told to just accept it.
I didn’t make a scene. I went to find my coat, I texted him that I wasn’t feeling well and needed to head out, and I left. He called me the next morning and said I’d embarrassed him by disappearing mid event and that he’d noticed I seemed off after he introduced me. I told him why. He said I was being oversensitive and that “stepson” was just easier to explain in that context.
I haven’t responded since.
TL;DR My biological dad introduced me as his stepson at his retirement party, I left without making a scene, he says I overreacted.
