AITA for exposing my sister’s lies at a family dinner after she tried to ruin my reputation?
Throwaway because my family knows my main account.
I (24F) have an older sister, “Lena” (29F), who has always been the golden child. Growing up, she could do no wrong, while I was constantly told to “be more like your sister.” I learned early to stay quiet and keep the peace.
Things escalated last year when I moved back home temporarily after a bad breakup and job loss. Lena told everyone she was “supporting me,” but behind my back, she was telling relatives that I was lazy, irresponsible, and “refusing to work.” I didn’t find out until an aunt casually asked when I planned on “finally growing up.”
I confronted Lena privately. She laughed it off and said I was “too sensitive” and that she was “just being honest.”
Fast forward to last weekend. We had a big family dinner because my parents were celebrating their anniversary. Everything was going fine until Lena made a joke at my expense in front of everyone, saying, “At least I’m not still living off Mom and Dad.” The room went quiet. I felt embarrassed and angry, but something in me snapped.
So I calmly pulled out my phone and read messages Lena had sent me over the past year—asking me to cover her bills, begging me not to tell anyone she’d maxed out her credit cards, and thanking me for “saving her” financially multiple times. I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t insult her. I just read the messages and put my phone down.
Lena started crying and accused me of “humiliating her on purpose.” My parents were shocked. Some relatives said I went too far and should have handled it privately. Others said she deserved it after publicly shaming me.
Now the family group chat is a mess, Lena isn’t speaking to me, and I’m being told I “ruined a happy moment.”
I feel guilty—but also relieved that the truth is finally out.
So… AITA for exposing her at the dinner table?
